Travis Preston directs theatre and opera throughout the world. He is Artistic Director of the Center for New Performance at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). His theatre work in the US includes the world premieres of Democracy in America and Terra Nova at the Yale Repertory Theater and the American premieres of Koltes’ Roberto Zucco and Buero Vallejo’s Sleep of Reason.
He directed the award-winning production of King Lear that inaugurated the Center for New Performance and was subsequently invited to the Frictions Festival in France. He also directed Macbeth with Stephen Dillane, which opened at REDCAT in Los Angeles and was presented by the Almeida Theatre and the Sydney and Adelaide Festivals.
In Europe he has directed Boris Godounov and a highly controversial production of Luigi Nono’s Al Gran Sole Carico D’Amore - both at the Hamburg State Opera. Travis has also been developing theatrical presentations for new music compositions – most notably Bell Solaris and Ah!, based on the Diamond Sutra – both by David Rosenboom.
Upcoming projects include The Long Road to Freedom, a collaboration with Harry Belafonte based on the history of African-American music.
In 2008 he was named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture for “contributions to the arts in France and throughout the world”.
