Adrian Rees
Adrian studied theatre design at the Wimbledon School of Art. He was Head of Design at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry for seven years, where he designed more than sixty productions, including Pal Joey, Hay Fever, Fiddler On The Roof, Martin Chuzzlewit, Shadowlands, A Twitch On The Thread, Safe In Our Hands, The Importance Of Being Earnest, Tess Of The D’Urbevilles, The Curse Of The Baskervilles, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Hard Times, Made In Bangkok, Oliver!, The Country Wife, Blood Brothers, The Silver Sword, Hello, I’m Eight, and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
His designs for the Coventry Mystery Plays in the Cathedral Ruins won national critical acclaim, as did his work for Catherine Cookson’s The Fifteen Streets, which toured the country and then opened at The Playhouse Theatre in London’s West End.
Adrian designed the costumes for the Coventry production of Bob Carlton’s Return To The Forbidden Planet, which then opened at the Cambridge Theatre, London and won the Olivier Award for Best Musical 1990. His design for Ariel the Robot has since been seen on Broadway, in Tokyo, Japan, and on the UK tour.
In London, Adrian designed Three Guys Naked From The Waist Down at the Donmar Warehouse, followed by costumes for the musical Leonardo - A Portrait Of Love at the Strand.
He designed the touring production of In The Midnight Hour for Bob Carlton, and the tour of Rob Bettinson’s Bare Necessities for E & B.
Adrian was the UK Associate Designer for the tour of High Society, a production first seen in Australia, which won the TMA Award for Best Design.
He designed Singular Women for the Theatre of Comedy, which opened in Bromley and subsequently had a short tour.
Adrian has worked extensively at Leicester Haymarket, designing the set and costumes for The Sound Of Music, A View From The Bridge (and its revival), The Rink, A Passionate Woman, The Importance Of Being Earnest and Sunday In The Park With George. He designed Hot Stuff at Leicester Haymarket, and its tour and revival and returned to Leicester Haymarket to design the set and costumes for Dolly West’s Kitchen.
Adrian also designed The Trackers Of Oxyrhynchus for West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Cherry Orchard at The Theatre Royal, York and Alcestis for Northern Broadsides.
He was the UK associate designer for the national tour of Annie, starring Lily Savage.
He designed Fame for Edinburgh, national tour, and its run in the West End.
Adrian’s recent West End productions are the set and costumes for 125th Street at the Shaftesbury Theatre, Jailhouse Rock at the Piccadilly Theatre and Buddy.
For Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Adrian has designed the set and costumes for Admirable Crichton, Treasure Island, Chimneys, The Grapes of Wrath, Snake In The Grass and Taking Sides. He has also designed the set for The Winslow Boy, The Hollow, The Queen Of Spades, The Shop At Sly Corner, To Kill A Mockingbird, Arcadia and Wild Honey.
Adrian recently designed the costumes and set for Round The Horne at the Theatre Royal Brighton.
